OXYGEN 1st / 2nd LEVEL

Oxygen First Aid for Scuba Diving
1° & 2° LIVELLO
Oxygen (O2) is produced and sold as a medicinal gas and is a medicine in all respects (DLvo 219/06). Being the most important molecule for the survival of the human organism, its clinical use is often decisive for the survival of a patient.

1st LEVEL:

Learning objectives

Course participants must be familiar with the signs and symptoms of major diving injuries including pre-drowning and decompression illnesses (artery air embolism and decompression sickness).
Course participants must be able to demonstrate the correct deployment, assembly, disassembly and use of all components of the DAN Oxygen Unit. This includes the use of demand regulator/mask, constant flow (with oxygen delivery up to 25 lpm), non-rebreather mask and oronasal resuscitation mask with supplemental oxygen supply.

To successfully complete the DAN Oxygen Provider Course, participants must demonstrate skill and confidence in the deployment, assembly and disassembly of all parts of the DAN Oxygen Unit (or other accepted units):

  • Environmental safety verification
    • Deployment and use of the DAN Oxygen Unit
    • Selection and preparation of the appropriate oxygen mask
    • Using the DAN Oxygen Unit with the following oxygen delivery devices:
      • Demand regulator and mask
      • Constant flow, non-rebreathe mask
      • Oronasal resuscitation mask with supplementary oxygen
      • Identification of the main components of the DAN Oxygen Unit
      • Oxygen cylinder and taps
      • Multifunction dispenser
      • "T" knob
      • Knob Key
      • Oxygen seal
      • Constant flow control
      • Intermediate pressure hose (White)
      • Pressure activated control valve (at threaded outlet)
      • Demand dispenser
      • Oronasal mask
      • Non-rebreather mask
      • Oronasal resuscitation mask with supplementary oxygen

    • 2nd LEVEL:

    • The DAN Advanced Oxygen First Aid for Scuba Diving Injuries (“DAN Advanced Oxygen Provider”) course program is designed to convey the knowledge and skills necessary to implement Basic Life Support (BLS) and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), with resuscitation techniques to help the diver who is not breathing. The course is divided into two parts: the use of a manually operated respirator (Manual Triggered Ventilator MTV, also known as a resuscitation valve) and the use of the ambu bag (bag-valve-mask BVM). In accordance with local laws, operators will be trained to use MTV alone or both - MTV and BVM.

    • Learning objectives

    • At the end of this program, course participants should be able to:

      • List instructions for administering oxygen to injured divers who are not breathing.
      • Establish ideal oxygen concentrations and the factors that can influence them.
      • Inspect the manually operated respirator (MTV) and/or ambu bag (Bag Valve Mask or BVM).
      • Describe the circumstances in which to use MTV and/or Bag Valve Mask BVM.
      • List ventilation instructions with MTV and/or Bag Valve Mask BVM.
      • List potential problems associated with the use of MTV and/or Bag Valve Mask BVM.
      • List the factors that determine effective ventilation with MTV and/or Bag Valve Mask BVM.
      • Describe the characteristics of effective ventilation with MTV and/or Bag Valve Mask BVM.
      • Explain the procedures to follow for cleaning, disinfection and maintenance of MTV and/or Bag Valve Mask BVM.
      • Perform an environmental safety assessment.
      • List the steps required in carrying out an environmental safety assessment.
      • Check the patency of the airways (Airway), breathing (Breathing) and circulation (ABC) of the injured diver.

      • Demonstrate a caring attitude towards an injured diver.
      • Establish and maintain airway and breathing (give artificial respiration) on an injured diver.
      • Disassemble and reassemble MTV and/or Bag Valve Mask BVM.
      • Demonstrate correct technique for testing MTV and/or Bag Valve Mask BVM before using them.
      • Use MTV and/or Bag Valve Mask BVM to resuscitate divers who are not breathing (a dummy will be used during the course)
      • Use manually operated ventilator to provide oxygen to breathing divers.

      • The nature and purpose of this course is to teach Oxygen Providers to provide first aid, using MTV and/or BVM, to injured divers who are not breathing.

      • This course does not provide complete instruction in cardiorespiratory resuscitation (CPR).
